Bare Your Boobs for a Great Cause!

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a local business owner is joining the fight in a very creative way. Manayunk native and internationally known artist Sandy O and her company Creative Juice Group are presenting a Breast Cancer awareness painted body shoot on Wednesday October 26th at their studio in Bridgeport, PA.

They will be painting women as well as a drag queen for this shoot.  All models will be naked from the waist up. Aspiring performance artists of all stripes who would like to help increase awareness and wish to be painted are also encouraged to contact Creative Juice Group.

I recently asked Sandy O what she does and her response was “I paint naked people”. Therefore this event is a perfect fit in the fight against an awful disease. But it’s also very personal. Sandy O has not only witnessed her own mother’s courageous battle with Breast Cancer, but has also been recently diagnosed with it herself.  Having spoken to her, I can tell you that she’s clearly not backing down from the fight.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of women and men are diagnosed with breast cancer. By the end of 2011, the Komen Foundation estimates there will be 38,520 breast cancer-related deaths in the United States alone. Sandy O and the other talented professional artists at Creative Juice Group remain committed to the fight.

The event will take place all day long on Wednesday with the final photos taking place around 7:00pm when all the models will be painted and ready for a grand finale shot.

Perhaps you can join them and help in the battle against Breast Cancer? Maybe you’ve seen the painted on baseball jersey’s such as the CJG model featured here? Well here’s the perfect event to attend, see how it’s done and join the cause!

As the staff at the Creative Juice Group said, “We can’t wait to bare our boobs for a good cause.”

Bravo Sandy O!

Dan Wheldon 1978-2011

I had the opportunity to meet Dan Wheldon at Daytona in January of 2006. He had just come off the best season an Indy car driver could have. Winning the Indianapolis 500 and the Indy Car championship in 2005.

When this photo was made (Jan 2006) Dan had just singed with the Target Ganssi Racing, they and Team Penske are the two dominant teams in Indy car racing and very successful in NASCAR . Ganassi also ran two team operation in the Grand Am sports car series and their Premier event is the 24hrs of Daytona. In 2006 there were only a handful of drivers who could claim an Indy 500 win and a win in the prestigious 24hrs of Daytona. There are special races that command a certain amount of respect because of history or challenge to your ability and all drivers want to win those, The “24hrs” is one of them.

I hung around the pits after a practice session when Dan came by. I introduced myself and asked if we could do a couple of shots. The worst someone can say is no. I understand these folks are very busy and their time is precious. They have cameras in their faces constantly ,especially at a race tracks. I asked him if he could do a couple of photos with me I promised it would only be a minute. He said “sure but I must go over and talk with this guy (engineer I guess?) but I’ll be right back”,” Ok” I said . I thought that was very cool. So a few minutes later here he comes, “Hi I’m Dan”, “Hi Dan I’m Kevin Thank you for your time” “No problem” he said.

That was the first and unfortunately last time I will see Dan Wheldon. I only met him for a second really, but many drivers would or could not come out of their trailers after a meeting to do a posed photo . I thought that was really nice of him, Thanks Dan!

Philadelphia Wedding,Downtown Club, Philadelphia Water Works

Last May I had the pleasure to be the photographer for Kate Banse & Michael Clegg’s wedding. We started our day at the Omni Hotel where we did their first glance or reveal photos. I always love those, everyone is so excited! Then we took the limo to the Philadelphia Art Museum for bridal party and Bride and Groom photos. The Art Museum has so many wonderful spots to make great Images from. For me, I do love the city scape(Rocky shot) photo. I know it’s been done, but it’s a good one! Many great shots have come from there.

We then strolled around the Museum to the Waterworks where the ceremony was to begin. What a great place for a wedding! The other nice thing about the Waterworks is all the area for portraits. Great light and beautiful back drops!

From there we were off to the Down Town Club. Always a good time and wonderful venue.

Michael is in the Air Force ,he is stationed In Mississippi and Kate is back here in Philly. I know Michael had to leave his Bride a few days after the wedding for military duty. I have great respect for those who sacrifice and serve our country.

I wish all the best to Kate and Michael, We had a wonderful day, Thank you!

Baltimore Grand Prix-Indy Car-Danica Patrick-Mario Andretti

It was April of 1970 when my stepfather took me to an Indy car race at the Trenton fairgrounds speedway in Trenton New Jersey. From that moment I was hooked on racing and race cars. Like many of boys my age(9 years old) we loved our Hot Wheels and cool cars! Some of you remember those days? I remember at the time rooting for Mario Andretti he was in car #1 the USAC champion! Oh, and he was from Pennsylvania. All the more reason to adopt him as my hero. I must say I picked a good one!

The thing I remember most was the smell of the fuel and the speed at which these cars zoomed by me. I tried as hard as I could to get as close as I could just to feel the speed and power of those cars. This was my first passion before I found photography. I wanted so bad to be a professional race car driver but some dreams are just that, dreams.

Many years passed and I became an professional photographer, but I still had the desire to become involved with racing somehow? By a stroke of luck I had been able to get credentials for the 1997 Daytona 24 hr race. It was great because it is in January and the weather is much better in Florida than here(PA) at that time of year.  So as a shot in the dark I sent my photos to RACER magazine, well I became one of their top shooters for the next three years.

The best thing about all of this was the fact that I got to meet and be friends with Mario Andretti. I will never forget being in Miami(Homestead speedway) standing in pit lane and this guy comes up to me and says “Hey Kevin how are you doing”? That guy was Mario Andretti. It’s funny how life can come full circle.

Fast forward to August of 2011 I have another opportunity to be a part of racing. I will be photographing the Inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix form Sept 1st to Sept 4th. featuring drivers like Danica Patrick,Dario Franchitti and Marco Andretti to name a few.  I will be working with the best photographers in the business, the team from LAT-USA , lead by Michael Levitt. Mike is a good friend of mine and I can’t thank him enough for this opportunity. The best thing I know how to do for Mike is as he would say “just get me some good stuff”,you got it buddy!

I have included in this post some of my favorite images from my years at Racer Magazine.

The lake House Inn, Ashley & Drew,Bucks County weddings

2011 will go down for me as one of my best years in the wedding business. I have had such great time with folks. Ashley and Drew’s wedding at The lake House Inn in Perkasie, was no exception. A great time with great folks.

Most of our weddings this year we have been posting on the Kevin York Photography Facebook fan page. This is one of them. These selections come from our “day of slide show”. I think this is a nice touch for the bride and groom to see some images from their day before they leave for the honeymoon. Better yet they are posted no later than 48hrs after the wedding so you can send them to friends or family.

Congratulations to Ashley and Drew,we wish you all the best!
