Philadelphia Wedding,Downtown Club, Philadelphia Water Works

Last May I had the pleasure to be the photographer for Kate Banse & Michael Clegg’s wedding. We started our day at the Omni Hotel where we did their first glance or reveal photos. I always love those, everyone is so excited! Then we took the limo to the Philadelphia Art Museum for bridal party and Bride and Groom photos. The Art Museum has so many wonderful spots to make great Images from. For me, I do love the city scape(Rocky shot) photo. I know it’s been done, but it’s a good one! Many great shots have come from there.

We then strolled around the Museum to the Waterworks where the ceremony was to begin. What a great place for a wedding! The other nice thing about the Waterworks is all the area for portraits. Great light and beautiful back drops!

From there we were off to the Down Town Club. Always a good time and wonderful venue.

Michael is in the Air Force ,he is stationed In Mississippi and Kate is back here in Philly. I know Michael had to leave his Bride a few days after the wedding for military duty. I have great respect for those who sacrifice and serve our country.

I wish all the best to Kate and Michael, We had a wonderful day, Thank you!

Baltimore Grand Prix-Indy Car-Danica Patrick-Mario Andretti

It was April of 1970 when my stepfather took me to an Indy car race at the Trenton fairgrounds speedway in Trenton New Jersey. From that moment I was hooked on racing and race cars. Like many of boys my age(9 years old) we loved our Hot Wheels and cool cars! Some of you remember those days? I remember at the time rooting for Mario Andretti he was in car #1 the USAC champion! Oh, and he was from Pennsylvania. All the more reason to adopt him as my hero. I must say I picked a good one!

The thing I remember most was the smell of the fuel and the speed at which these cars zoomed by me. I tried as hard as I could to get as close as I could just to feel the speed and power of those cars. This was my first passion before I found photography. I wanted so bad to be a professional race car driver but some dreams are just that, dreams.

Many years passed and I became an professional photographer, but I still had the desire to become involved with racing somehow? By a stroke of luck I had been able to get credentials for the 1997 Daytona 24 hr race. It was great because it is in January and the weather is much better in Florida than here(PA) at that time of year.  So as a shot in the dark I sent my photos to RACER magazine, well I became one of their top shooters for the next three years.

The best thing about all of this was the fact that I got to meet and be friends with Mario Andretti. I will never forget being in Miami(Homestead speedway) standing in pit lane and this guy comes up to me and says “Hey Kevin how are you doing”? That guy was Mario Andretti. It’s funny how life can come full circle.

Fast forward to August of 2011 I have another opportunity to be a part of racing. I will be photographing the Inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix form Sept 1st to Sept 4th. featuring drivers like Danica Patrick,Dario Franchitti and Marco Andretti to name a few.  I will be working with the best photographers in the business, the team from LAT-USA , lead by Michael Levitt. Mike is a good friend of mine and I can’t thank him enough for this opportunity. The best thing I know how to do for Mike is as he would say “just get me some good stuff”,you got it buddy!

I have included in this post some of my favorite images from my years at Racer Magazine.

The lake House Inn, Ashley & Drew,Bucks County weddings

2011 will go down for me as one of my best years in the wedding business. I have had such great time with folks. Ashley and Drew’s wedding at The lake House Inn in Perkasie, was no exception. A great time with great folks.

Most of our weddings this year we have been posting on the Kevin York Photography Facebook fan page. This is one of them. These selections come from our “day of slide show”. I think this is a nice touch for the bride and groom to see some images from their day before they leave for the honeymoon. Better yet they are posted no later than 48hrs after the wedding so you can send them to friends or family.

Congratulations to Ashley and Drew,we wish you all the best!

Foo Fighters-Dave Grohl- A very Foo Fightin’ wedding proposal

Last week I had the opportunity to meet a very interesting and fun couple,Melanie and Rick. They came to my home to meet with me about their wedding photography. Our meeting was one of the most interesting and fun client meetings I can recall. They told me that the wedding was to be at The Huntingdon Valley Country Club.

As the meeting went on I could tell they were fans of my work. More importantly we just hit it off. We spoke to each other like friends. I could tell they were a fun couple, good sports and very much in love, just the type of folks I love to work with. As the evening went on Rick had mentioned that he met Dave Grohl. I also had met Dave ,in Times Square NYC just walking down the street. I have met many celebrities some talk with you some not. So I was figuring it was kinda like one of those “hey I got his autograph things” no not even close…. I was BLOWN AWAY !

Here is their story in Rick and Melanie’s own words and pictures!

Foo Fighters Memphis Proposal 05/20/2011

We boarded the plane in Philly at 5:50 AM  on May 20th and ended up in Memphis, TN. After picking up our rental car and checking in at the Hotel, we head to the Gibson Memphis Factory. As a woman, Melanie had to primp herself, making us late for our tour at the Gibson factory. When we arrived at Gibson we had missed our 12 o’clock tour and had to wait for the next one. We decided to walk across the street to the Fedex Forum the where the Foo Fighters were playing that night. After a while we headed into the Starbucks across the street for some water. It was May and it was hot! Before walking into the Starbucks, I said to Melanie, “What is with your obsessions with Starbucks?“ We walked in and asked for 2 bottles of water when we both overheard a conversation. I looked over my shoulder and saw long hair and tattoos.  I took a double take and we both realized that it was Dave Grohl, from the Foo Fighters.  He was just about to leave while I’m franticly trying to pay for the bottles of waters. Finally we both approach Dave.  We introduce ourselves and talked to him for a minute, when I turn to Melanie and say “I need to talk to Dave in private.” She looked at me like I was crazy but listens and goes outside. At this time people realize that Dave Grohl is in Starbucks and he’s getting ready to go. I have to ask him a favor and I can’t let this chance slip away, so I approach him and say “Dave, can I talk to you for a second?” He says yes and I told him that we flew down from Philly to see them and that the Foo Fghters were the first show Melanie and I saw together when we started dating in 2007. Finally I said, “I want to ask her to marry me and I was wondering if you could help me out.” Dave responds, “No bullshit, your gonna do it, right?” I told him I had the ring and he tells me his game plan. I wrote my name down on a piece a paper and he said “I’ll put you on the list.” He finally wiggles his way out of the crowd of people in Starbucks and while he is walking out the door he turns to Melanie and says, “I’ll see you at the show!”

The rest of the day, I was a nervous wreck and Melanie could tell. I constantly was checking the will call window for the passes, but they never came. I started to think that maybe this was not going to happen, when I saw a security guard holding a door open to the Fed Ex Forum. I began to talk out loud to myself, wondering if I should talk to her. Melanie, at this point, was becoming upset because I was not acting like myself. She turns to me and says, “Just go and talk to her. STOP!” So that’s what I did. As I talked to this woman, she stopped Tim, the venue promoter. I pled my case, showing him the picture we took with Dave, and our tickets. He said he would talk with the tour manager and come find me in the stands during the show to let me know what is going on.

We went for dinner and I still had no clue what was going on. My stomach was in knots, so we tried to find the lightest food in Memphis, since everything is bbq and friend. This happened to be the Hard Rock Café. We walked in and they were playing, on continuous rotation, the Foo Fighters. This was killing me. After barely eating dinner, we went to the show.

The first band played. Then Motorhead came on. Still nothing. Then, as Motorhead started playing one of the last songs in their set, I saw a silhouette of a man. He waved me down.  It was Tim, the venue promoter. He slipped me passes. Quickly, I handed them to Melanie and we put them on. Then we tried to get on the floor so I could follow Dave’s plan from this morning. The venue staff weren’t letting us down, so eventually I found Tim and he told me to relax, enjoy the show, and he would come a get us.

The show was awesome, but Melanie was so nervous because she didn’t know what was going on. Eventually, All My Life came on and Tim came to get us. I literally pulled Melanie out of the row and ran down the stairs. We walked down the aisle of the floor, following Tim. He took us backstage. I was set. No butterflies. I knew it was going to happen. Melanie, on the other hand, was not. She had no clue what was going on. She tried to hold my hand, but I wouldn’t since I was holding the ring. I think this gave her a little hint. We were backstage, waiting, when Dave started to tell the story about Starbucks and the favor that was asked of him. He brought me on stage, bantered a little, but then gave me to mic to tell the real reason I was up on stage with one of the biggest rock bands in the world: I wanted to ask my girlfriend to marry me. The crowd roared. My girlfriend of almost 4 years, who is never quite and is always in a rush, walked s-l-o-w-l-y on stage. I got down on one knee, with prompting from Chris Shiflett, the guitar player. I did it. Melanie said the screaming was so loud, she couldn’t even hear what I was saying, but she knew what it was. She had no words and just put her hand out.

The Foo’s then kept us onstage and sat us on Taylor Hawkins’s drum riser. Dave then said, “This one’s for the happy couple.“ They dedicated Everlong to us. The whole band was so nice and congratulated us on our engagement. Seriously, the nicest guys ever. When we were leaving the venue, people were screaming, “CONGRATULATIONS! and honking at us in the street.  We were recognized throughout our trip in Memphis, from Graceland to Behle Street and everywhere in between.

Rick

P.S. Thanks guys for choosing me as your photographer:) I look forward to a very Foo Fightin’ Wedding!

Renee & Tim’s Bucks County Wedding

You couldn’t have asked for more beautiful weather on a Saturday in April, unless of course you were Renee and Tim, and it was your wedding day.The ceremony was held at St. John the Evangelist in Lambertville, New Jersey, an the architecture in the church was magnificent, and as you can see from the photos made for some fantastic images. Shortly after the ceremony, the bride and groom were given a police escort from Lambertville to New Hope (doesn’t hurt that the groom is a police officer) for the reception party, held at Occasions, in New Hope.

So in addition to beautiful weather, and a magnificent chapel, Occasions is located beside the New Hope Railroad, which Tim and Renee were excited to incorporate into the photography shoot between the ceremony and wedding reception. Once the actual wedding reception began and the band began playing, my team really got going. My second shooter Erin and I were busy taking photographs while Ray – the ‘behind the scenes’ guy – got to work editing the pictures we had taken so far (and more that were to come of the wedding formalities) into what we call a ‘day of’ slide show. This is where we assemble photos of the events of the day and present them in a digital slide show for the guests to see… before the party is over!

I really couldn’t have asked for a better day. All of the guests were in high spirits, the families were great to work with (really great folks), the weather was perfect, and Fran and the folks at Occasions in New Hope were really easy to work with. Sarah Morrison from All About Events was also invaluable in helping me accomplish everything I was able to achieve that day from the photographer’s standpoint, and speaking of photographers, Laura Eaton – fellow industry photographer – was there with her Soiree Photo Lounge, which is great fun and had people laughing and having a good time. The up lighting provided by Cutting Edge Entertainment really added ambiance to the room, which really makes for some dramatic photos as well.

I should probably add that Renee is an event planner herself, and works with Sarah Morrison at All About Events, and although it’s quite an honor to be chosen by a fellow wedding industry professional to shoot their wedding, it is even a greater honor to be asked by Renee and Tim because I consider them good friends. To be chosen by friends is the greatest honor of all.

Tim and Renee, I wish you the best of luck, health and happiness in your journeys as husband and wife.
